Swindon Shuffle Stage

swindon shuffle logo

Sugarhill '08 is dedicated to supporting local music. That's why we've got a whole stage dedicated to the best of new talent from Swindon and the local area, having again invited local promoter SoP Promotions to programme two days of local breakthrough acts.

SoP are well known for their Club Fuzz nights and The Swindon Shuffle, a multi-venue showcase that's held in August each year. Swindon has one of the hottest music scenes in the UK right now and is fast becoming a regular stop-off for record company and management talent scouts.

SoP's programme at Sugarhill ‘08 reflects this energy, offering everything from acoustic singer-songwriters through to rock, so be sure to stop by – you may just discover the next big thing for yourself. Acts confirmed so far include:

  • Beatbullyz
  • Talk in Code
  • Hip Route
  • Attica Seasons
  • Rats Ruined my Brain
  • Jeff Like Usual
  • Matthew Killford
  • 2 Sick Monkeys
  • Buswell
  • Trip Dress

Late Night Programme

After Dark – featuring Tina C’s Late Night Festival of Spectacle and Cassette Player

Still think you’ll have energy to burn when the main stage goes dark on Saturday night? Because we've come up with an exclusive late night show that promises to be both outrageous and gut-wrenchingly funny at the same time and you won’t want to miss it.

Your host for the evening is the inimitable Miss Tina C, who has been described by The Independent as being "as polished, sparkling and tasteless as the rhinestone on her tiny denim frock".

Tina's hits are legendary, and include Course I Want You For Your Body (Got A Mind of My Own), Our Love Died Like Elvis (It Was Messy At The End) and I Became Schizophrenic (So I Could Love You Twice As Much).

A glamorous procession of merchants of spectacle (many of whom we’ve diverted on their way back from the Edinburgh Fringe), will be accompanying Tina C on the bill including:

The Raymond and Mr Timkins RevueThe Raymond and Mr Timkins Revue – a charismatically-challenged uncle and mute nephew with an act combining driven rock anthems (on stylophone and acoustic guitar), with a plethora of prop-assisted material and some serial wordplay that would put Stephen Fry to shame. They have to be seen to be believed, but don’t be surprised if you die laughing at the same time.

La GoulueLa Goulue – as seen by HRH’s Princes William and Harry, this is burlesque at its best from an artist who titillates and teases with demure, yet suggestive concealment then reveals a finale with a wild twist that you definitely won’t be expecting!

Kalki Hula GirlKalki Hula Girl – the original hula hoop sparkplug who will keep you "enthralled for every minute she is on stage" according to Time Out. Moving in a blur from her feet to the floor and back again, this performer extraordinaire will leave you in whirl!

Miss BehaveMiss Behave – if Betty Boop met Marlene Dietrich and developed a sword-swallowing act, then Miss Behave would be the result. She’s the poster girl for world smash hit show La Clique and has been seen by millions on The Tonight Show, Guinness World Records, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and The Graham Norton Show. Need we say more?

Don't panic if cabaret isn’t quite your thing, as in conjunction with the Swindon Shuffle, we’re proud to present hot new club night Cassette Player.  For one night only, Rob t Mod, Phil Dirt, Jung and friends will be packing up their turntables to bring their indie disco to our beautiful festival site as part of the After Dark programme.  As usual there will be plenty of surprises from these local turntablists with mixed up tracks from The Strokes, Justice, Hot Chip, M.I.A, Foals, The Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Kate Bush and The Libertines, capping off a massive day of music at Sugarhill ‘08.

And guess what? You don’t have to pay any extra for the After Dark programme – entry is included in the weekend ticket price, proving once again that Sugarhill ’08 is not only offering a really hot programme, but that it’s also the best value festival around too!

Workshops

Workshops are new to Sugarhill for 2008 and if enough of you come out to play and take part, we’ll be expanding the programme at future events – here’s a taster of the type of sessions that will be available:

  • DJ Skills with Dave Linton – popular at festivals around the country, these workshops will give you a chance to get some hands on DJ experience, learn the principals of beat mixing and find out how to operate both vinyl and CD formats.  Workshops are conducted in small groups giving everyone a chance to have a hands-on experience.
  • Sunday Morning Yoga – a great way to stretch and wake up for early birds and family groups, set against the beautiful backdrop of the farm before the day’s main programme kicks off.
  • Oficina da Capoeira – part martial art, part game and part dance, Capoeira originated in Brazil during the 16th century.  Here, a team from Capoeira Cheltenham will demonstrate techniques and give you the opportunity to learn some of the basic moves in a session that’s ideal for larger groups and families where lots of people can get involved.

As workshops will run at variable times throughout the festival, please check timings when you arrive on site. Please note that workshop places are subject to availability.

Family Activities

Coming soon...

Real Ale & Cider

Our lovely bars team is busy stocking up with a fantastic selection of beers and ciders from suppliers including the White Horse Brewery in Farringdon, Stonehenge Ales in Tring, SA Brain & Co in Cardiff and many more.  We’re hoping to add a downloadable guide here soon, but please note that as the full selection will be spread over the weekend, all real ales and ciders are subject to availability.

Trade Stalls

We’re going to be offering a range of food and drink options at Sugarhill ’08, plus a small trade village featuring CD and record traders (most of the artists appearing at Sugarhill 08 will be selling their latest CDs), Sugarhill merchandise and much more. Keep an eye out for announcements over the weeks approaching the festival as we are negotiating with artists to offer as many CD signings as we can.

If you would like to run a trade stall, (sorry but catering concession applications have now closed), it is rather late to apply, but if you would like to try, you can click here for a copy of our Rules & Regulations for Traders (including Fair Trade Policy), then download a Trader application pack. You will need to submit your application as quickly as possible, but please note that because time is now limited that you may not be successful.
